--->Comments on Title
I don't usually comment on the title but it was a bit
disturbing.
It is Middle-earth not Middle-Earth, Middle Earth or
Middle earth.
Its like calling Star Wars "Star Floors" or "Sky
Wars". I mean,
a slip up on the site - well stuff happens - but a
blatantly incorrect
title? It undermines the credibility of the entire
site. That said,
I might suggest actually renaming the site. There are
so many
out there with that title it gets a bit confusing.
(Like the 101
Arwen Evenstars or Lady of Rohans). It might be neat
to call
it something more unique...you are a talented creative
person
and I'm sure can come up with something.
--->Main Layout
Unless the top width is 640 or less you need to create
two sites,
one for the around 50% of people with 800/600
resolution, and one
for the rest of the people who can view the higher one
you have there.
It is easy enough to do that using php or something.
That is one
drawback of the top banner style layout - it is pretty
inflexible.
I like how spread out your navigation is; makes it
clear and easy to read.
one problem is that since you have a space between the
links you also
need a space between the sub-headers and the links
below to keep
consistancy. Took me a minute to figure out what the
weird text
bumping up against some of the links was. Thank you
for having the
music off unless someone wishes to hear it, that gives
great peace of mind!
I like how you organized the featured site, it doesn't
take long to load and
has a nice bit of information about it. In general
the navigation should not
be longer than the main text but in this case I think
it works with the spread
out feel of the site. If you want to play around with
it, I would try
having the navigation sub heads broken up like this:
Contests:
AWARD CONTEST
BLEND CHALLENGE
Fans:
FAN ART
WRITINGS
Fun:
CHAT
GAMES
HUMOUR
MESSAGE BOARD
POLL
QUIZZES
etc
--->Main Graphics
You have a truely lovely and moving top graphic
(despite its awkward width) The golden tones in it
help with the warmth of emotion coming from it. There
is lovely balance and even though the text is just
thrown on there you don't even notice it. The bold
white line is a distraction, however. I would screen
it back to maybe a very pale peach - put some of the
colour into it just a tiny bit or take it out
entirely. It interrupts the beautiful flow you have
going down into the content area. The background is a
trifle pink compared with the rest of the site, but
there is enough neutral to downplay it and give more
emphasis to the main layout. It could use a little
tweaking but it is not hugely distracting.
--->Home Content
I like the quote you have featured, it is nice to have
it slightly bigger and have lots of space around it.
If people saw a huge block of text on the intro they
might get scared and leave, so that little touch works
very well to draw attention and keep the viewer
interested. The space between updates and the actual
updates is a bit too much, I'd halve it. If it gets
too far away you stop connecting it with what is
below. I love the way you organized the updates with
the date bold and so much detail in the entry. I
don't know if I said this before but you really have
the best updates system I've ever seen. You have an
excellent variety of codes, I like how you gave tips
on the winners area.
--->Award Contest
Okay first major problem -- if you change the content
to be that different you also need to change the
background with the black speech. it is not neutral
enough to be indifferent to the colours within the
layout. Either make the background a grey or black or
white...or you'll need to change it to match the new
hue. Like for Award you need it to be much
yellow/golder. I think the navigation for the awards
is very clear, you keep good spacing on the various
pages which is very important. On Nominate you need
to provide how to contact you by email as well.
--->Blend Contest
Now this is a bit confusing. Usually if you change
the layout for a sub section you change it the same
way for all the sub sections, or else all pages are
different. Yet on Blends instead of keeping the
challenges layout you switched to the main page
layout...rather confusing. I later figured out you
just changed it for the awards. I have two
suggestions: You could either make a separate site
for the Aragorn Crown Awards, or else incorporate it
more into the site. As it is it is only confusing.
Back to Blends: I like your variety of images to use,
and the fact you use thumbnails. You need to make
your email more visible, I couldn't find it offhand.
Thank you for having links to the winning blends, some
blends sites don't do that and it is highly annoying.
--->Fan Art
Excellent organization and a good thumbnail size for
the images. One request, since most people don't use
client based email: provide your email actually typed
out somewhere where they can copy paste it into their
browser. Thank you! That goes for the entire site.
--->Writings
Perhaps you could provide a way to submit to fanfic?
Anyway the poems are wonderful, might want to make the
authors a bit more clear though. Maybe break up the
LotR ones and the Fan ones?
--->Chat
The rules were very clear, I tested it and it works
just fine. Perhaps you could schedule some specific
chats that people could show up for, and transcripts
of especially interesting conversations.
--->Games
Very fun how you customized some standard games. Just
add more!
--->Humour
You need to close up the space between the title and
content, got a bit too large. I like how you broke up
the different categories. The last one is a broken
image on the pics one, though. Also try making some
of your own that are unique. It's not that hard.
--->Forum
Great that you have a warning page, I like the idea of
putting the rules there right off the bat. Would be
nice to have it open in a new window though.
--->Polling
I love how you used the lovely icons for personality
in the poll, it is very classy looking. If I liked
Hobbits I'd be almost sure to vote! Would be nice to
have results of past polls.
--->Quizzes
Honestly it would be far more interesting for you to
have your own quizzes on your own site.
You can do them using javascript.
--->Avatar/Sig Sets
You have some really beautiful sets there, especially
the Gondor/Rohan one. It is a great idea to put the
avatars and sigs together since that is how they ought
to go anyway! It would be interesting to accept
donations into that page.
--->Banners
Oh oh the music just started up! :( But yay you typed
your email out, looks great! Again you have some
truly beautiful banners there, wonderful job. Nice
sizes on them too - not too huge.
--->Blinkies
Very cute, just need a lot more of them.
--->Buddy Icons
Great thing to have them broken up by size, otherwise
loading gets opressive.
Again, wonderful organization with them by character.
I'm not too keen on animated,
it would be nice to have some stagnant ones available
as well.
--->Graphics
Bit too large a space between top and subnav. Your
buttons were especially good; also great thought
putting the tile bgs in that are similar to your own
for people to use.
--->Photo Gallery
Check your spelling of the titles, but good concept of
breaking them down. I think I commented before on the
fact I liked your gallery setup. You also have a good
variety of pictures that are not just the standard
ones online.
--->Sprites
You have my favorite Dwarf, Kili! I love the fact you
included lesser known characters, make more that is
all I can say.
--->Wallpaper
Your Frodo one is simply stunning; the best part about
these is they are all different styles of wallpaper.
Keep experimenting and doing more, especially of the
Hobbits.
--->Comments/Suggestions/Survey/Quotes
Links not working, take them down entirely if they
aren't linked.
--->About Me
I like the detail, but you can never add enough. It
would be nice to hear how you became a LotR fan.
--->About Site
I for one love to hear about why a site was started,
you mention it was after the movies but honestly it
would be great to have more detail...why do you like
Hobbits so much...what really made you begin the
site...etc
--->Bios
Lots of broken images that need to be fixed. Also,
you can't just toss statements like claiming Aragorn
was rightful king of Gondor without at least about
three paragraphs of citations from the books to back
it up since the evidence for things like that is, at
best, scanty. (Actually he was not the rightful king
but we won't get into that right here) the point is
you state theories as facts without evidence to back
it up. You need to have more factual information, or
else, be clear. Have a disclaimer about it being
written from a fan's perspective on what they feel the
character is all about and it is not necessarily true
in the exact sense.
--->News
AAAAHHHH!!!! First major blooper! You need a warning
page before pulling a stunt like that!
--->Affiliates
I love your spacing, well coordinated. I would put
something about what you are looking for in an
affiliate.
--->Fanlistings
It would be nice to have explanations of why you
joined those particular fanlistings.
--->Links
I love the little descriptions you have on the sites,
even more would be nice.
The textual base makes loading time wonderful, so
great job on this page!
--->Link Me
If it weren't for your title, these would really be
little jems of codes. Just lovely!
I would make a few 31/88 ones though; a lot of people
have started using them.
--->Listings
Again, your spacing is simply wonderful. It is not
often seen in a site and admirable.
--->Nominated
It would be nice for you to list what categories your
site is nomed under, that is always nice to know.
--->Reviewed
Hmm well I don't see my code up there but thats okay
I'm in a good mood lol
I like the fact you included a bit of one of the
reviews, it is always nice to have highlights.
OVERALL MUST DO
1. Fix Title
2. Fiddle with top colouration a bit
3. Fiddle with some of the spacing on parts
4. Fiddle with the navigation
